February Releases

[ 1 ] February 1, 2012 |

January was a good month for new books and movies, and this month is going to be no less exciting. Book nuts ourselves (especially Lauren), we’ve looked into all the best books and movies that you need to check out over the next few weeks. Here’s a list of our picks:

Words:

Feb 1 – The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey

So you may not be able to escape the snow with this novel, but then again, you may not want to. In this magical story, a couple creates a child out of snow – only to find out the next morning that their “snow child” has become a real girl, running wild through the Alaskan woods. Sounds like a better, more modern version, of Pinocchio, right?

Feb 1 – Bright Side Up: 100 Ways to be Happier Right Now by Amy Spencer

As students, we understand there are days when you feel like the world is out to get you and nothing is ever going to be right again. This book will show us all that happiness is possible if we just put everything into perspective. Bright Side Up is the perfect go-to book whenever you need a little boost!

Feb 2 – No One Is Here Except All of Us by Ramona Ausubul

After leaving behind everything they’ve ever known and relocating for thousands of years, a small Jewish tribe in Romania decides there is nowhere else to go. War is approaching and, with the urging of a little girl and mysterious stranger, the village decides to leave the world around them and recreate a world of their own. This debut novel reminds us the importance of being alive, showing us that our truths are always changing and make us who we are: survivors.

Feb 7 – Behind the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo

A nonfiction piece that is sure to remind us all how lucky we truly are, this novel revolves around some of the world’s poorest people portraying not only their strength and challenges, but also their humanity. The raw stories in this novel will not only transform you, but also inspire you.

Feb 14 – I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella

After losing her engagement ring in a hotel and having her cell phone stolen, Poppy Wyatt has never felt unluckier. That is, until she find an unwanted cell phone in her hotel’s trash. All seems well until the cell phone’s owner enters the scene, wanting back his phone. In a world of technology, Sophie Kinsella has taken our everyday life and created an enrapturing story of life, love and the mistakes we make along the way.

Feb 3 – Big Miracle

In this uplifting true story, a group of people (including a news reporter and a Greenpeace volunteer) gathers together in Alaska to help a family of whales from being trapped within rapidly forming ice. Starring the ever-lovely Drew Barrymore and the charming John Krasinski, Big Miracle is sure to warm our hearts.

Feb 3 – The Woman in Black

Daniel Radcliffe is ditching his round glasses and opting for a darker, sexier look in this new horror movie based on the bestselling novel, The Woman in Black. Radcliffe stars as a young lawyer who travels to a small town, only to discover a female ghost who is out to take revenge on the locals. Sounds thrilling? Just wait until we see Daniel on screen again…

Feb 10 – The Vow

In what is sure to be an all-out cry fest, The Vow challenges the age-old wedding vow “Through sickness and in health.” After a tragic car accident, Paige wakes up from a coma with no memory of her life before with her husband, who makes all efforts to win back her heart. Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum star in this romantic flick. Think of this as a sweeter, more touching version of 50 First Dates.

Feb 10 – Star Wars I 3D

There is no series in this world more infamous than George Lucas’ Star Wars. And this Episode is no different. In what has been called the weak link of the saga, Lucas decided to reinvent his classis series in (what else?) 3-D. Whether you’re a lover or a hater, who wouldn’t want to check out Star Wars: The Phantom Menace in the theatres? I know I am.

Feb 17 – The Secret World of Arrietty

In an anime version of The Borrowers, a four-inch family of three borrows household items from another family’s home. All is well until the human son discovers Arrietty, the daughter of the little family. A secret friendship is made between the two and adventure ensues. With the vocal talents of Brigit Mendler, David Henrie, Will Arnett and Amy Poehler, this animated movie proves once again that special things come in small packages (including me).

Which releases are you looking forward to the most?
